Convoy briefs follow a five-part format that mirrors the standard operations order: Situation, Mission, Execution, Sustainment, and Command and Signal. The Situation explains the environment, risks, and any external factors that could affect the convoy. The Mission states the convoy’s objective and what must be accomplished. The Execution outlines how the convoy will move, including routes, formations, timings, tasks for each element, and contingencies for threats or detours. Sustainment covers logistics support—fuel, maintenance, rations, and any resupply or recovery plans. Command and Signal defines who is in charge, the chain of command, call signs, and radio/communication procedures.

This structure is the best because it gives a clear, complete, and actionable picture of how the convoy will operate, who is responsible for what, and how to communicate under both normal and degraded conditions. It avoids mixing in unrelated topics such as personnel rosters or insurance details, which are not part of a convoy brief, and keeps the briefing focused on the essential elements that drive safe and efficient movement.
